The American passion for trucks and pickups goes back many decades and when Toyota introduced the Tacoma – in 1999 a compact truck for the masses - onto the market they were clearly looking to revive this passion with a well thought-out and very impressive vehicle. They were right, of course, for within a short time the Toyota Tacoma had become the best selling truck in America, and remains such to this day. It is interesting to note that it approached the traditional market leader, the Ford Ranger, gradually, matching it for sales in 2004, but once into the lead streaked away and now has the market sector covered by a very wide margin indeed. Part of this must be down to the variety of models in the range – the Tacoma is offered with a selection of cab sizes and layouts and a different range of interior trim levels – and the legendary traits of reliability and quality that come with Tacoma products, plus the regular facelifts and redesigns that allow the Toyota Tacoma to remain as rugged and attractive as it was at launch. The current model of Tacoma is bigger than its predecessor, a genuine mid-sized truck that packs a punch thanks to the 4.0liter 250bhp V6 or equally versatile 2.7 liter in-line four, and with all-wheel drive as a permanent fixture on some models in the range the off-road and load lugging capabilities of this already intensely practical car have been taken to another level. An interesting development has been Toyota’s commitment to specials, with the X-Runner Tacoma a particular favorite among younger drivers. The design of this special edition harks back to the days of custom cars and specials, and its butch yet attractive enhancements are matched by an increased suspension performance and other enhancements that are sure to make it a collector’s item of the future. With such technical advances as ABS braking and other performance related devices, the Tacoma lacks for nothing when compared with other 21st century rivals, and is very much a car for the moment. Fuel economy is also better than many in the class thanks to Toyota’s knowledge with fuel management systems, and constant improvements to the capabilities of this very popular vehicle keep it one step ahead of the pack. The Toyota Tacoma appeals to a wide variety of users, from the family man to he who needs a valid and viable workhorse, and with over 150,000 sold every year in the US and no signs of those sales figures diminishing it continues to exert a hold on drivers who want a car that is good on the road or off. The 2009 version, with a choice of five or six speed manual, or four and five speed automatic transmissions, may just be the best one yet.
