Do you want to move into a neighborhood with nice people? There's a new website that's attempting to give you more information to do that - RottenNeighbor.com. This site attempts to bring information about nasty neighbors to the home buying public. It's secondary purpose is providing a place where people can rant about their neighbors and give advanced warning of sex criminals in the area. RottenNeighbor.com was developed by Brant Walker, after he had problems with his own neighbors. However, this is not his first website targeting people who many would term 'undesirables'. Walker first achieved notoriety thorough the Internet with the site BumFinder, a website that encouraged people to input the location of homeless people into a Google map. His next endeavor was FakeYourSpace.com, a site that sold fake pictures and identities to people looking to win the "friend wars" on MySpace via fake profiles. While Walker claims that this is a real estate tool that enables people to find better neighborhoods, many would find his motivations suspect. While RottenNeighbor doesn't exactly showcase the humanitarians of an area, it certainly lets you know about people who have not made a great impression on others in the vicinity. You can find out in seconds whether someone has had a problem with someone near a residence. The site has a mapping feature where you can enter in the address of a home and get a map showing "danger" spots, including good neighbors, bad neighbors, sex offenders and foreclosures. One can enter information about homes in the U.S. and Canada. Not only can people post rants/warnings/complaints on the message board, they can also post videos of their nutty neighbors. The positive side of this site, the good neighbors, is a nice touch to an otherwise rather bitter website. While there are truly nasty people living in society, it is questionable at best whether a website is going to enable people to find a perfect neighborhood, based on the complaints of people who aren't being held responsible for their public judgment of their fellow area-dwellers. There's little way to tell, other than actually living in a neighborhood, whether the accusations/complaints on RottonNeighbor are legitimate or just part of a smear campaign. It could be a useful tool, but in its present form, is still too vulnerable to abuse, in the author's opinion. There's nothing to stop people from painting a home or neighborhood as bad, filthy and dangerous for their own vindictive purposes. While entertaining and certainly worth a look, one should definitely take this site and others like it with a grain of salt.
