WXII-12 reported last month that a moped rider ended up in a Winston-Salem hospital due to injuries sustained in an accident with a pickup truck. The small Ford pickup hit Eduardo Ramirez Martinez, who was riding his moped down South Main Street in Mount Airy. At last report, Martinez was listed in stable condition in the trauma center at Wake Forest Baptist Health Center. At the time of the news story, the police investigation into the accident was ongoing.

Though statistics that are specific to mopeds are difficult to come by, it does not take a vast amount of quantitative research to understand that when a motor vehicle such as a car or a pickup truck collides with a moped, the rider of the moped is at an increased risk for injury. In fact, rarely do motor vehicles collide with mopeds in an accident without the moped rider suffering some form of serious injury.

Research that is available indicates that moped injuries represent approximately 10% of traffic related injuries for those under 25 years of age, and more than 40% for teens 16- to 17-years-old. The study concluded that moped injuries are a major source of traffic injury among late adolescent and post-adolescent young people.

Many motor vehicle operators are not so attentive to moped and bicycle riders as they should be. Seeing these riders as more of a nuisance than other vehicles that share the road, many drivers try to skirt around them or fail to notice them altogether. Consequently, moped and bicycle riders are at a constant disadvantage while on the road, both in terms of other drivers’ attitudes and because the weight and force of other vehicles will outmatch them when in an accident.

The outcome of the investigation into the accident that injured Mr. Martinez remains to be seen. However, if you or a loved one has been involved in an accident involving another motor vehicle that resulted in injuries, personal injury lawyers are available in the Winston-Salem area to make sure that you are not at an unfair disadvantage when it comes to collecting the compensation that is due you.
