This year Ford launched its new Focus Coupe on “American Idol”, which may be an indication of how badly they were affected by the much criticized design last year, or it may just be a sign of how badly they want a bigger share of the Millennial market of teenagers reaching driving age. Either way, the compact Ford Focus Sedan and Coupe are both much improved from last year with a sportier look, better performance, more gadgets and still great fuel economy. With the economic downturn and fuel prices leading many to downgrade their cars, the Ford Focus is seeing a surge in popularity this year, already up over 45% from last year. 2009 Ford Focus Performance The Ford Focus is all about fun and economy, and in those two areas it really excels. In the Sedan there are four different trims; the S, SE, sports SES and luxury SEL and in the Coupe there is a SE and SES. All carry the Mazda-designed 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 140 hp in the sedan models and 143hp in the coupes, and both styles have the option of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Stability control is also an option with ABS. On fuel economy the Ford Focus beats the likes of the smaller Honda Git and Nissan Versa hands down, with an EPA rated 24/35mpg city/highway ratio, however we have heard many reports of nearly 40mpg. There is also a Duratec 20E engine available that produces 130hp and allows the Focus to qualify as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) with emissions even cleaner than many gas-electric hybrids. Handling-wise both the Sedan and Coupe offer an improved ride this year, with enough power and performance (especially in the manuals) to have a bit of fun zipping around the back roads. The SES sedan and coupe are by far the best options in terms of performance with their standard sport suspension giving a firmer ride and the SES coupe boasts 17-inch wheels while the sedan has 16-inch. As long as you remember that these are basically low-budget cheap and cheerful cars that are not designed as high performance vehicles, it is not hard to forgive the intrusive road and engine noise and inadequacies in acceleration. Just sit back, relax and have fun. 2009 Ford Focus Interior Keeping in mind the cheap and cheerful idea, the interior of the Ford Focus range in 2009 is pretty good. Yes, there is a lot of plastic, and even the leather seats of the SEL aren’t all that impressive, but it is comfortable and roomy, and even the Coupe offers enough space in the rear seat for two small adults to sit without feeling squashed. The dashboard is clear and well-arranged and there are additional features available like the optional sunroof and remote start system. The top-of-the-line SEL model carries Ford’s Sync system which allows voice control of your cell phone, PDA and MP3 player and will have even the most restrained drivers fiddling with the gadgets at the traffic lights. 2009 Ford Focus Safety Safety is always a strong point for Ford, and this year the 2009 Focus range carries the new optional electronic stability system and four-wheel antilock brakes with traction control for even better safety. With standard front, front side and side curtain airbags the Focus has gained five out of five stars from the NHTSA crash tests for front-on accident situations for both driver and passenger. Side crash situations earned only three stars, but rollover resistance was a bit better at four stars, an all-round respectable score for a smaller car. * Optional stability system, ABS and traction control * Front, front side and curtain side airbags * Latch child tethering seatbelts * Tire pressure monitoring system * Truck release Overall the 2009 Ford Focus has made some big improvements this year in its efforts to attract more of the small car market, aiming squarely at the teens and young twenties with their sporty look, zippy performance and cool gadgets. Although in overall performance it has a hard time competing with the likes of the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa, it offers enough at a small enough price to be competitive and does a great job at being both fun and economical.
